Back Pain: Which Support Belt Should I Use?

Back pain is often caused by poor posture, overexertion, falls, or by other underlying conditions that lead to chronic pain (e.g., osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, scoliosis…). The pain can be acute or chronic, depending on its duration. Generally, implementing good lifestyle and dietary habits along with daily physical exercise are effective in relieving pain. In any case, especially in patients with persistent pain, you should always consult a healthcare professional and have them diagnose the condition and indicate the best treatment.

Among the therapeutic alternatives, one that has proven effective is the use of orthoses such as support belts, which help relieve pain and prevent more serious injuries. But which type of support belt is most recommended in each case?

There are various types of support belts: elastic, compression, sacrolumbar,… each differing in compression and support area. Abdominal compression belts, for example, are effective in post-operative treatment of thoracic and abdominal injuries or postpartum. They also help relieve mild to moderate muscle pain in lower back pain, as they provide gentle compression and support, and you can choose from different numbers of bands depending on whether you want to cover a larger or smaller area of the back.

On the other hand, elastic belts provide a thermal effect in the application area, relieving pain in cases of trauma or lower back pain, as well as providing support and stability in the lumbar region. These belts can be either tubular or with closures (to apply the desired compression) and extend from the lower costal area to the sacro-pelvic region, depending on placement. Additionally, their elasticity allows for full range of motion.

Sacrolumbar belts provide the greatest compression, as many of them have stays for enhanced lumbar support, as well as elastic reinforcement bands to regulate pressure in the treated area. They are used in cases of acute or chronic lower back pain, and also preventively in situations requiring physical exertion or as occupational protection. There are also special sacrolumbar belts for pregnant women, which are designed with an anatomical shape for the belly and help relieve the lumbar area by providing support and comfort, especially during the final months of pregnancy.

At Fleming, we have all types of support belts, so if you have any questions, contact us! We will advise you in the best possible way.
