Blood Pressure: 10 Tips for Measuring It at Home:

Blood pressure is a key indicator of cardiovascular health. It is measured in millimetres of mercury (mmHg) and consists of two values: systolic pressure (when the heart pumps blood) and diastolic pressure (when the heart is at rest). Normal blood pressure is around 120/80 mmHg, while higher values may indicate hypertension, a risk factor for heart disease and stroke.

To obtain reliable blood pressure readings at home, follow these 10 essential tips:

1. Adjust the blood pressure monitor cuff on the arm:

  • Without it being too tight and in direct contact with the skin.
  • Avoid clothing constricting the arm.
  • Keep the palm facing up and the arm slightly bent.

2. Remain silent:

Do not talk or move throughout the measurement.

3. It is advisable to take the measurement 3 times:

With an interval of about 5 minutes between readings, and record the average of the 3 values.

4. Always take your blood pressure at the same time:

So you can compare daily values, preferably before breakfast.

5. Always use approved and calibrated devices:

To always obtain accurate and reliable values.

6. Stay calm and at rest:

It is recommended to relax for 5 minutes before taking your blood pressure.

7. Do not do activities or exercise, and do not consume stimulants:

For example: caffeine, alcohol, tobacco… for at least 30 minutes before the measurement.

8. Empty your bladder before the measurement:

Preferably, empty your bladder before taking your blood pressure.

9. Sit upright:

With your feet flat on the floor, legs uncrossed, and your arm supported on a surface at heart level.

10. Position the cuff correctly:

So that it sits approximately 2 cm above the elbow, with the cuff tube positioned on the inner, lower part of the forearm.

In the case of wrist blood pressure monitors, position the device so that the screen is on the inside of the wrist.
