The defibrillator is a portable electronic device that diagnoses and treats cardiorespiratory arrest when caused by ventricular fibrillation or pulseless ventricular tachycardia. It restores an effective heart rhythm both electrically and mechanically.
Defibrillation consists of delivering a direct current impulse to the heart, in such a way that all myocardial cells are simultaneously depolarized, to resume a normal electrical rhythm.

Indications:
The defibrillator is highly effective for most cardiac arrests. These arrests occur when the heart fibrillates but its rhythm is not adequate. Its function is to restore the proper rhythm to the heart.
Early defibrillation, within 3-5 minutes of collapse, can produce survival rates as high as 49-75%. Each minute of delay in defibrillation reduces the probability of survival to discharge by 10-15%.
THERAPEUTIC PURPOSE
The defibrillator is designed to be used by NON-medical personnel, following the instructions for use indicated on the device.
Its use is only recommended in the case of two heart rhythm disorders: ventricular fibrillation (electrical activity exists but not mechanical) and ventricular tachycardia (electrical activity exists but blood pumping is ineffective).
This device is completely ineffective in cardiac arrest with asystole, since in this case the heart, in addition to not pumping blood, has no electrical activity. It is also not useful in pulseless electrical activity, in which electrical activity exists, even normal, but there is no mechanical effectiveness. In these two cases, chest compression must be used while other advanced measures are established.
