Urine Bags – Urinary Incontinence

What is a urine bag and which one should I use?

A urine bag is a medical device made of PVC or similar material.

It is a receptacle used to collect urine from patients suffering from urinary incontinence. There are several different models, but the most practical distinction is between bed urine bags and leg urine bags.

The Bed Urine Bag is used for patients while they are lying in bed. The bag has a larger capacity, 2 liters, and is hung from the bed using a metal or plastic hanger. It may have a die-cut handle to make it more comfortable for the user to transport if they need to get out of bed.

The Leg Urine Bag is used for patients while performing routine activities, sitting or standing, and is secured to the leg with straps. The capacity of these bags is usually around 750 ml.

They should be used in conjunction with a urine collection sheath, for male users, or a urinary catheter, for female users.

Types of Urine Bags:

  • With Anti-Reflux Valve: prevents liquid from returning to the source, thus avoiding infections.
  • With Drainage Valve: for convenient and quick emptying of the urine bag.
  • With Die-Cut Handle: for transporting the bag.
  • With Special Length Tubing: different tube lengths available according to patient needs.
  • Different Sizes and Purposes: includes bed urine bags and leg urine bags.

Usage Tips:

  • For single patient use.
  • Place below bladder level.
  • Do not crimp the tubing to avoid interrupting urine flow.
  • If it has a drainage valve, ensure it is closed before use.
  • Replace the bag before it reaches its maximum capacity.
  • Do not hold the bag by the tubing to prevent it from breaking and spilling its contents.
  • Always consult a healthcare professional before using a urine bag.
