This happens due to a problem with the production or use of insulin, a hormone that allows glucose to enter cells to be used as energy. <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #339966;\"><em>Insulin: <\/em><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">hormone that regulates glucose in the blood.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There is a global prevalence of approximately <span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong>10%<\/strong> <\/span>of the population.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong>TYPES OF DIABETES:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong>Type 1 Diabetes:<\/strong><\/span>\n<ul>\n<li>Cannot be prevented.<\/li>\n<li>It is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks the pancreatic cells that produce insulin.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"504\" data-end=\"607\">Generally appears in childhood or adolescence, although it can also be diagnosed in adults.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"611\" data-end=\"690\">People with type 1 diabetes require daily insulin injections.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong>Type 2 Diabetes:<\/strong><\/span>\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"720\" data-end=\"810\">It is the most common form of diabetes and is related to insulin resistance.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"814\" data-end=\"885\">The body still produces insulin but does not use it efficiently.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"889\" data-end=\"977\">It is associated with factors such as obesity, lack of physical activity, and genetics.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"981\" data-end=\"1080\">It can be controlled with lifestyle changes, medications, and, in some cases, insulin.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #339966;\"><em>Recommendations: <span style=\"color: #000000;\">healthy diet, physical activity, monitor blood sugar levels, avoid tobacco use.<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong>Gestational Diabetes:<\/strong><\/span>\n<ul>\n<li>Affects pregnant women approximately midway through pregnancy.<\/li>\n<li>Usually returns to normal after delivery.<\/li>\n<li>May increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes in the future.<\/li>\n<li>Appears more frequently in women with risk factors (overweight, lack of physical activity&#8230;)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"1344\" data-end=\"1373\"><span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong data-start=\"1344\" data-end=\"1371\">Other Types of Diabetes:<\/strong><\/span>\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"1377\" data-end=\"1445\"><strong data-start=\"1379\" data-end=\"1402\">Monogenic diabetes<\/strong>: caused by rare genetic mutations.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1449\" data-end=\"1571\"><strong data-start=\"1451\" data-end=\"1474\">Secondary diabetes<\/strong>: result of other diseases or the use of certain medications (such as corticosteroids).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It is important to monitor blood glucose levels to detect:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong>Hyperglycemia <\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&gt; 130 mg\/dL<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong>Hypoglycemia<\/strong><\/span> &lt; 70 mg\/dL<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong>HOW TO MONITOR
